The Compulsory Secondary Education School José Mª Morón y Barrientos is in the town of Cumbres Mayores (Huelva) in Andalusia, at the northern end of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park, just on the border with Extremadura.

The school is located in the southeast of the town, in the flattest part, its main façade in the Plaza Nuestra Señora De la Esperanza. The school building was built in 1939 as a Primary School and underwent several renovations during the 60’s and 70’s. In the school year 1996-97, it became a secondary school depending on Santa Olalla de Cala’s secondary school. A year later, it became an independent centre of secondary education. Eventually, in the year 2002, the building was reformed and enlarged in order to adapt it to the required regulations for its use, remaining this way until today.

Nowadays there are two buildings: the main one, where the classrooms are located, and a second one,  made up of a gym and lockers, for Physical Education lessons. In addition, we have a fully equipped kitchen and dining area where the cooking and catering training lessons take place. Outside there is a football pitch/basketball course and a playground area.

The school teaches the four years of Compulsory Secondary Education plus the two years of Cooking and Catering Basic Vocational Training.

Currently, we are around twenty teachers and eighty students. The students’ ages range from twelve to sixteen years old in C.S. E. and from 16 to 21 in Basic Vocational Training.

Ours is officially tagged as an ICT Centre and a School: Space of Peace and we are developing the following projects:

Coeducation: Searching for equality.

Forma Joven

Programa Aldea

Library and Reading Plan

Erasmus+: Building Active and Critical Thinking Student.

As far as ICT (Information and Communication Technology) programs are concerned, we are carrying out an European programme called PRODIG to improve the digital competence in our school. One of the key objectives of PRODIG is to use the latest technologies to transform the previous traditional methodologies, such as the use of radio as an educational tool, problem based learning, “gamification” and the use of educational platforms in order to update everyday classroom routines, raise our students motivation and prevent the current non-existent school dropout as well as promoting that the students stay at school developing their further education.
