WORLD BOOK DAY
23rd APRIL WORLD BOOK DAY
The world book day on 23rd April, coincides with the passing of writers William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes. This day pays tribute to books and authors and promotes access to reading for as many people as possible.
During the month of April and throughout the year, it is essential to take the time to read alone or with children. Book Day is a reason to celebrate the importance of reading, encourage children’s growth as readers and promote a love of literature.
Entresierras bilingual department wanted to celebrate this day by bringing fairy tales into focus. Students from 1st to 4th grade were approached to read in English language some children’s stories as part of a group activity at the bilingual lessons. Round in circles, learners read out loud in turns with the help of the language assistant Luke who gave them support and confidence to do their best in every moment. The selection of stories includes Snow White for 1st grade, William Tale for 2nd grade, moving through Jack and the Beanstalk for 3rd grade and Happy Prince for the oldest group that is 4th grade. Some sessions, from 2 to 3 were devoted to read the stories all together and then, the last 2 sessions were used to watch their film versions.
A normal guided watching for the youngest groups (1st and 2nd grades) moving into more original, creative and less teacher- led activities for 3rd and 4th grades; storyboard drawing and telling what is going on some tiles of the story, guessing the ending activity through a debate for the oldest group and finding out if they were right by seeing it. Regarding the moral in each story, it was addressed as individual lessons in building better teenagers who will become adult soon.
Reading can help us combat isolation, strengthen bonds between people and broaden our horizons, while stimulating our minds and our creativity. Never give it up.
