Ses composantes basiques sous un prisme de verre et trois verres.Un d\u2019eux porte une fente d\u2019ampleur r\u00e9glable, une autre dans une \u00e9chelle gradu\u00e9e et le troisi\u00e8me peut se d\u00e9placer sur le plan horizontal. Le prisme est situ\u00e9 dans la zone centrale de l\u2019appareil prot\u00e9g\u00e9 de la lumi\u00e8re ext\u00e9rieure par une carcasse avec trois or\u00edfices. La lumi\u00e8re qui proc\u00e8de de la source lumineuse que nous voulons \u00e9tudier, est pass\u00e9e \u00e0 travers la fente du premier verre, nous verrons un ensemble de fentes colori\u00e9es (des images de la fente) qui constituent ce qu\u2019on appelle\u00a0 \u201cle spectre\u201d de la radiation incidente. Nous pouvons voir en lui apparaitre de lignes d\u00e9termin\u00e9es\u00a0 de couleur sur le fond noir (spectre d\u2019\u00e9mission) ou lignes sur fond colori\u00e9 (spectre d\u2019absortion)dont la position et ampleur peut \u00eatre mesur\u00e9e en employant une \u00e9chelle gradu\u00e9e.
