THANKS-GIVING

The Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was very hard. But the next fall they had a good harvest from the seed they had planted. They decided to celebrate with a feast, including the Indians who had helped them survive their first year. The men went hunting to get meat for the feast. It is not certain that wild turkey was a part of their feast since they used the term turkey” for any kind of wild birds.

There was also no milk, cider, potatoes or butter. There were no cows to produce milk and the newly-discovered potato was still thought by many to be poisonous. The feast did include fish, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, corn, clams, venison and plums. There was also no milk, cider, potatoes or butter. HALLOWEEN

Halloween also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from Celtic harvest festivals that may have pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, and that this festival was Christianized as Halloween. Some academics, however, support the view that Halloween began independently as a solely Christian holiday.
