Physical Appearance and clothes Description (Extra practice)
Hello guys,
Here you are some pictures for you to try physical appearance and clothes description. Choose a picture and try to describe what you are required (hair, hair and face, face and complexion, clothes, etc.). Then leave a comment with your description. I recommend revising the vocabulary you need (physical appearance description and clothes vocabulary) before leaving a comment. While writing your comment (mientras que escribes tu comentario) don´t look at the vocabulary you need.
PICTURE 1 (HAIR, )
PICTURE 2 (HAIR AND EYES)
PICTURE 3 (HAIR, FACE AND COMPLEXION)
PICTURE 4 (HAIR, CLOTHES)
PICTURE 6 (HEIGHT, AGE, COMPLEXION AND CLOTHES)
PICTURE 7 (HEIGHT, BUILD, AGE, HAIR AND CLOTHES)
PICTURE 8 ( HAIR, EYES, FACE AND CLOTHES)
PICTURE 9 (HAIR, BUILD, CLOTHES and ACCESSORIES )
PICTURE 10 (CLOTHES)
PICTURE 1
She has shoulder length curly brown hair
Great! Just one thing, use a hyphen (-) between «shoulder» and «length».
She has long grey straing hair and She wearing her hair in a ponytail. She has big round brown with long eyelashes
Picture? the order «long gray/grey straing hair» is incorrect. In addition, «straing» is not a valid word and «..
and She wearing» contains mistakes: one of them is related to the incorrect use of a Capital letter (mayúscula) when you write «She» and the other mistake is that the form of the present continuous is not complete (there is something missing).
Finally, in «she has big round brown (?) with long eyelashes» there is something missing (falta algo) between «brown» and «with».
I think you are describing picture 2. By the way, does she really have gray/grey hair?
Era PICTURE 2
eso me pasa por no mirar, era liso y lo he escrito mal, quería decir pelo gris, no canoso, pero pongo negro y no me complico.
She has long black straigth hair and she’s wearing her hair in a ponytail. She has big round brown eyes with long eyelashes
«straigth» >incorrect spelling
Revise the order of adjectives to describe hair. You wrote first «long
greystraing hair» and then «longstraigthblack hair. The order is size, style, colour.I was surprised that you wrote «grey». We can see a young lady in the picture. By the way, we can say «grey» (BE) or «gray» (AE).
You’re right.
Today young girls have hair of all colours and the girl in photo 2 has black hair. I thought the girl in photo 2 had gray (gris) hair, but I think «gray» is only for «canoso».
Grey/Gray for old people
Picture 3: She has long frizzy black hair, She has a triangle face and She has dark skim
Great! There are some silly mistakes:
You can’t use a Capital letter (mayúscula) when you write the second and third «She»
The spelling of «skim» is wrong.
Picture 10: He wearing a white shirt, a red jacket,a grey jeans, and a black and grey boots
Mistakes:
1. The form of the present continuous of «wear» is incomplete.
2.We can’t use the article «a» with «jeans» and «boots» because we use «a» with singular nouns and «jeans» and «boots» are plural nouns.
Tip (Consejo):
Your description is very simple. You just describe the colour. At A2 level you need to use between 2 o 3 adjectives before the piece of clothing.
PICTURE 4 (HAIR, CLOTHES)
She has long frizzy red hair and she is wearing her hair in a braid.
She is wearing a white short-sleeve T-shirt and she is wearing long blue jeans and red trainers.
Perfect!
PICTURE 6 (HEIGHT, AGE, COMPLEXION AND CLOTHES)
He is not very tall. He is meaddle age. He has a sun tanned complexion.
He is wearing blue suit, white long-sleeve shirt, green plain tie and
dark brown shoes
Your description contains some mistakes:
-«meaddle age» is not written correctly.
-You tend to (tiendes a) omit «a» with singular clothes such as «suit», «shirt», «tie». Remember we use «a/an» with singular nouns and no article with plural nouns.
Would you mind (¿Te importaría…?)writing your description again without the mistakes mentioned above? (arriba)?
He is not very tall. He is meddle age. He has a sun tanned complexion.
He is wearing a blue suit,a white long-sleeve shirt,a green plain tie and
dark brown shoes
PICTURE 7 (HEIGHT, BUILD, AGE, HAIR AND CLOTHES)
He is average height and well built.
He is an old man.
He has short, straight and white hair.
He is wearing long blue tracksuit and brown trainers
Nearly perfect! You forgot to use the article «a» with «tracksuit», that is, «He is wearing a long blue tracksuit and….»
PICTURE 8 ( HAIR, EYES, FACE AND CLOTHES)
She has long, straight and blond hair.
She has big, round and light-blue eyes.
Her face is round and she hasn’t wrinkles.
She’s wearing red and black check and strap midi dress
A very complete description! You forgot to use «a» with «dress».
Apart from that, we can´t say «she
hasn´twrinkles». The verb «have» is made negative with «don’t/doesn´t», that is, «…and she doesn´t have wrinkles». Also, you could have said «..and she hasn´t got wrinkles». Remember «have» is not an auxiliary verb, so you can´t make the negative of «have» with «not». However, «have got» is an auxiliary verb, so we can make the negative of «have got» with «not.I hope you understand my explanation.
PICTURE 9 (HAIR, BUILD, CLOTHES and ACCESSORIES )
She has long, wavy and light brown hair.
She is slim.
She is wearing a short, red and white striped (horizontal and vertical stripeds) and sleeveless top dress. On de middle of the dress there is a drawing of a heart. She is wearing white sandals and sunglasses.
-«stripeds» is not written correctly
-You forgot to use «a» with «
topdress»-«top dress» is not a valid word to refer to a piece of clothing. Anyway, the girl is wearing a dress.
-«On de middle of..» is not written correctly. Anyway, there is a common way to express that idea: «a sleeveless dress with a heart motif.
-One more thing: you added a lot of adjectives before the noun «
topdress». We need to be careful with that because we can make unnecessary mistakes. There is an entry on the blog «Grammar: «order of adjectives» where I give some advice for clothes description. When you say: » She is wearing a short, red and white striped (horizontal and vertical stripeds) and sleevelesstopdress», you are using 3 adjectives: length – pattern (describing the colour of the pattern) – style.I recommend using this order: «size or length» + colour + pattern or style. You used in your sentence both «pattern» and «style» Therefore, you made a mistake. If you want to add «pattern» and «style», the order changes:
e.g. a short sleeveless (style first) red and white striped (colour of the pattern and pattern) dress. (option 1)
e.g. a short red and white striped dress without sleeves. (option 2)
My advice in order to avoid mistakes is that you use «pattern» or «style». If despite my advice you want to use both «pattern» and «style», remember that you need to follow another order.
PICTURE 2 (HAIR AND EYES)
She has long, straight and swept back on ponytail hair.
She has big, round and brown eyes.
Hello,
Regarding your first sentence «she has long, straight and swept back on ponytail hair», first we say «swept back in a ponytail». I would have not used «swept back in a ponytail» as an adjective before «hair». Therefore, the natural sentence would have been «she has long straight and black hair (which is) swept back in a ponytail or «she has long, straight and back hair in a swept-back ponytail» because «swept back» makes reference to «ponytail» and not to «hair».
PICTURE 3 (HAIR, FACE AND COMPLEXION)
She has long, wavy and black hair.
She has a sun tanned complexion.
You described hair and complexion correctly. However, you didn´t describe «face».
PICTURE 8 (hair, eyes, face and clothes)
She has shoulder-lenght straight fair hair.
She has big round light blue eyes.
She has an oval face.
She is wearing a small red and black check strap dress with square neck.
A complete description! just one thing, with respect to the last sentence «She is wearing a small red and black check strap dress with square neck. You wrote a lot of adjectives before the noun. I would have written «She is wearing a small red back check dress with straps and square neck.
PICTURE 10 (CLOTHES)
He is wearing a white shirt, dark red long sleeved jacked, blue jeans and black boots.
Just modify the spelling of «jacked». By the way, jackets have long sleeves. Therefore, I would have used «long-sleeve» with «shirt» rather than with «jacket». One more thing, you forgot «a» with «jacket».
8- She has shoulder lenght straight blonde hair, big almond blue eyes, oval face, and wearing a sleveless red and black cheked dress with a black belt.
Mistakes to be corrected:
-Use a hyphen (-) between «shoulder» and «length».
-Incorrect spelling of «
lenght»-Omission of «an» before «oval face»
-Omission of «subject» and a part of the present continuous tense in «and (?) wearing..»
-Incorrect spelling of «
sleveless» and «cheked«PICTURE 4 (HAIR AND CLOTHES)
She has long red hair and she’s wearing her hair in a braid. She’s wearing a white, short-sleeve T-shirt, blue jeans and brown trainers. She’s wearing too a brown belt.
Great! Just remember the position of «too» in the sentence, end position. Here is a link with information about it
PICTURE 6 (HEIGHT, AGE, COMPLEXION AND CLOTHES)
He is not very tall. He is an adult man, about forty years old. He has a light-brown complexion and he is wearing a white, long-sleeved shirt, a blue suit, black shoes and a green tie.
Very good! Just one thing: we just say «He is an adult» as (ya que) «adult» is also a noun.
Picture 7. The old man leaves to run because he appears agile, slim and healthy. He’s got white little curly hair and a largue white moustache and his eyesbrows are white too. I can also tell that he has round blue eyes. Lastly I’ll tell that he wears a tracksuit and a pair trainers.
Mistakes to be corrected:
-Check how to say «salir a correr» (use an online dictionary such as «Wordreference»). If you describe what he is doing, you have to use «present continuous».
-the fact that (el hecho de que) the man appears agile is not a reason to say that «el esta saliendo a correr». Just omit «because», use a full stop (.) instead. Then continue with «He appears agile…»
-«largue» doesn’t exist
-Correct the spelling of «eyesbrows»
-Use a comma after «Lastly»
-Change «tell» for «say» («Tell» usually has a person as the object and often has two objects: «Have you told him the news yet?»)
-the tense of «wear» is incorrect. Remember you are describing clothes and the tense used to describe is «present continuous».
Good morning Pilar: Thanks for the correction. In the exercise I used the present continuous because I’m describing a picture. It’s not correct? I sould have start with: «I go inglés to describe…………
Hello Jesus,
You used «present simple» when you used «wear» to describe clothes and you used «present simple» to describe actions «leaves to run».
Remember we use «present continuous» to describe pictures but just clothes and actions people are doing in the picture (e.g.He is wearing a red shirt. He is reading a book).
For physical appearance (height, age, build, etc) we use «present simple» (e.g. he has big round lips/he is about twenty years old)
You must start the description of a picture in a speaking exam with «I am going to describe the following picture».
It’s clear. Thanks.
Great!
Picture 10.
He is wearing a white, long sleeve shirt witch V-neck, a dark red jacket, blue jeans and black and gray boots.
Great! Just add a hyphen between «long» and «sleeve» and correct the spelling of «witch»
Picture 2
She has long straight dark brown hair with a long ponytail and she has big rond brown eyes
Good! just replace «with» with «in» because the expression is «wear your/my/her/etc. hair in a ponytail/braid». Finally, correct the spelling of «rond».
Thank you

Remember we use «wear» in the present continuous to describe the clothes a person is wearing.
Some words are incorrectly spelt (trouser, sportwear, nead, ees, straigth)
