Mediation: «Accommodation in Florence»
29 Mar, 2021 por María del Pilar Zamora Lara

Hello,

Here is the mediation task you need to do for next week.

You are going on holiday to Florence with a friend. Read the advert and review of some holiday accommodation in Florence below. Then, write an email to your friend with the most relevant information you want to tell him/her.

-Remember to summarize the main ideas. You cannot include the whole information because you are limited by the number of words.

-Remember to use your own words. Do not copy the same vocabulary and grammar from the original texts, paraphrase.

-Remember to write between 40-60 words

-Use an informal register

-Do the activity as if you were (como si estuvieras) doing an exam, without using a dictionary or any other resources.

Deadline: 7th April

 Appartamenti di Vacanza a Firenze

Appartamento Palazzo Perudi  ref 29005

This is a stylish holiday apartment on the second floor of a converted palazzo near the centre of Florence. The flat is suitable for up to 4 adults, but as there is no lift, it is unsuitable for people who cannot manage stairs. Accommodation consists of two bedrooms, a kitchen with a dining area, a small living room and a balcony with a wonderful view of the cathedral. The kitchen is well equipped with a microwave oven, gas oven and electric hobs. The apartment has air conditioning and free wifi. Towels and bedding are provided, but you will need to bring your own hair dryer if you need one.  Smoking is not allowed inside the apartment, but there is a shared roof terrace where guests can smoke. No pets are allowed. Guests can collect the keys from a key box next to the front door of the apartment. The code is provided when you book.

Stan & Ollie

Loved the appartamento Palazzo Perudi! We stayed here for two weeks in July, and were very comfortable. The air conditioning was great; lots of holiday flats in Florence do not provide this. Matteo and Giulia were friendly hosts and left lots of information in the apartment about things to visit in Florence. The location of the flat is great, the views are superb and it is easy to get to all the sights on foot. It is clean and well equipped and the space is good for two people, but we think it would be a bit small for four. We liked the history of this old apartment, but some people might prefer something with a more modern feel. One thing we didn’t like was the noise from the street below at night, but maybe this is all part of the charm of an Italian holiday!

Reading: «Jobs»
24 Mar, 2021 por María del Pilar Zamora Lara

Hello,

Here is the reading we did in class:

Read the texts about different jobs and match sentences A−G to paragraphs 1−5. There is one sentence you do not need. 0 is the example.

Jobs

0    I greet customers and help them to manage their money. The pay is quite good, but I sometimes get bored. I have to sit down a lot and I often have to do the same thing many times a day.

1    I sit near the entrance to my office building, so I know most people who work for the company. I answer the telephone and transfer phone calls to the employee’s offices. I greet visitors and I also send out important emails, letters, and faxes. I’m always busy, but I prefer that.

2    I love going around talking to everyone and making sure that they have everything they need. When someone’s ill, it’s important to listen to them. They may feel frightened or lonely being away from home in a strange environment. It’s my job to take care of them and make their stay as comfortable as possible. I like everything about my job except the uniform – it’s just so unattractive!

3    In my job, every day is different. One day I might interview a politician in London and the next day I might be flying overnight to cover a story in Beijing. I spend a lot of time travelling, so I do most of my work on my laptop. I carry my camera everywhere – a good photograph can really help to get my message across. I’m rarely at home, but that’s OK. My work is my life!

4    Some nights, I hardly have time to grab a drink of water during my six-hour shift. It’s busy, it’s crowded and it’s very, very hot! But it’s worth it when a customer says how much they enjoyed their meal. And no one ever refuses an invitation to a dinner party at my house!

5    I often work a ten-hour shift, especially at peak times like Christmas and New Year. I don’t mind driving at night, in fact I like it. The city looks different at different times of the day, and I find that really interesting. I usually try to have a conversation with every customer I pick up. It makes the time pass more quickly.

A This person works from home.
B This person often has to work on public holidays.
C This person works in a bank.  0
D This person does not like their work uniform.
E This person enjoys having a lot to do at work.
F This person sometimes meets important people through their job.
G This person’s place of work is full of people.

Answer key

A – B 5 C 0 D 2 E 1 F 3 G 4

Vocabulary: difference between «all» and «everything» and position of «all» as a pronoun.
22 Mar, 2021 por María del Pilar Zamora Lara

Hello,

While correcting one activity in the book, 4b on page 27, we have come across (nos hemos encontrado) con «all». I explained that the position of «all» in a sentence (when we say «tod@s nosotr@s/ell@s/vosotr@s) depends on the verb. If the verb is a lexical verb, «all» goes before the lexical verb, and if the verb is an auxiliary verb, «all» goes after the auxiliary verb.  Here «all» is a pronoun

We are (auxiliary verb) all drinking.  (= All of us are drinking)

We all (lexical verb) enjoyed the party. (=All of us enjoyed the party)

After this explanation, Encarni Girón asked me if we could say «We ate all», and I said «no». Why? Go on the following link to understand the difference between «all» and «everything».

Pronunciation: an introduction to strong and weak forms
22 Mar, 2021 por María del Pilar Zamora Lara

Hello,

Today in class we have corrected one pronunciation activity, 4c on page 27. The activity was about if «was» and «were» in the past continuous were stressed or unstressed. The answer was unstressed. This activity has led me to (me ha llevado a) explain the difference between the strong and weak pronunciation of grammatical words.

Here is the link I have shown in class to explain that difference. Here is also a list of grammatical words which are weakened in connected speech.
