Future forms: «Be going to» and present continuous
Hello,
Here is the powerpoint I showed in class related to the use of «be going to» and the present continuous.
Taking into account what grammarians say, try to use the best tense according to your communicative intentions. Generally speaking, there is no difference between «be going to» and «present continuous» when we talk about future plans. Remember you can say «I am going to go to the cinema tonight» or «I am going to the cinema tonight». According to your textbook, it is very common to use the present continuous with the expressions tonight, this weekend, tomorrow, etc. and with verbs describing travel arrangements, for example, travel, go, leave, arrive.
Here is a website when an English teacher suggests which option to choose when you want to talk/write about your future plans and your textbook is not very clear about the possible difference between «be going to» and the present continuous.
By the way, here is a picture related to the different ways to express future in English that Encarni Amaro showed me in class, which is very useful to understand that future is not a grammatical tense in English as (ya que) there are different ways in English to express future. The picture shows the ways we have learnt up to now (hemos aprendido hasta ahora): present simple, present continuous and be going to + infinitive
