Voiced and Voiceless consonants
3 febrero, 2025 por María del Pilar Zamora Lara

Hello,

Time to revise voiced and voiceless consonant sounds. Here you are a summary of consonant sounds in British English:

British English: 21 consonant letters but 24 consonant sounds

/p/-/b/-/k/-/g/-/f/-/v/-/t/-/d/-/s/-/z/-/ʃ/-/ʒ/-/Ɵ/- /ð/-/tʃ/-/ʤ/-/l/-/r/-/w/-/j/-/m/-/n/-/ɳ/ /h/

VOICED consonant SOUNDS

b d g j, w l m n ŋ  r v z  ð dʒ  ʒ

VOICELESS  consonant SOUNDS

p t k s h f θ ∫ t∫

Here you are a pair of videos to learn about voiced and consonant sounds. Remember that the speaker does not  use the appropriate phonetic symbol for some specific consonant sounds, not even slashes to present sounds  (i.e. zh instead of /ʒ/, y (yod) instead of /j/, dg instead of / / ng instead of /ŋ/, th instead of /ð/ or /θ/, sh instead of //, and ch instead of /t∫/).
