    Hi!!
How would be the sentence number 5? Could it be «She had no an axe to grind and……. «?

    • María del Pilar Zamora Lara dice:

That sentence would be «She had no axe to grind». You can´t say «no an axe….» as this is not grammatically correct.

Be careful with some activities and sentences. Let me explain. For instance, the sentence you mention is «She had ___ ____ _____ and was only acting….». For that sentence, you are required to choose an option and the right option is «have an axe to grind», the problem is that if you make use of that sentence when writing or speaking then you need to modify that right option respecting the grammar of the sentence.

Apart from that, in other exercises (particularly the exercise where you need to write the corresponding expression) there are some sentences where you just write the original expression without respecting the grammar of the sentence given. For instance, for «I wish people would _______ their ________s more often!» you must write «speak your mind», if you write «speak» and «minds», your answer is not considered to be correct. This is a mistake by the person who created the activity.

In this regard, I put » I wish people would speak their minds»… and according the explanation, it could be » I wish people would speak your mind»????

        • María del Pilar Zamora Lara dice:

I know. That is what I tried to explain to you before. The teacher who designed this task made a mistake when considering the right answers. In that sentence ‘I wish…’ the teacher should have considered «speak» and «minds» to be the only correct answer, but he/she didn’t. While designing the task, the teacher included as a valid answer for each sentence the expression just as it is shown in a dictionary forgetting completely the grammar of the sentence. Consequently, the student has to write the expression just as it is shown in a dictionary and be aware of the fact that in that activity the grammar of the sentence is not taken into account.
Do you get the point? I hope so.

    Hi!!
Are these sentences ok, in order to make a pattern to use them?

    – «I don’t like to play devil’s advocate, yet, have you ever thought…..?»
    – «I want to/ would like to speak my mind in this regard/in this point»
    – «I am really sit on the fence in this point»
    – «I don’t want to beat about the bush, so, to conclude….»
    – «I don’t have an axe to grind in this regard, so…. I will support it/ I will support their ideas/ I will not support them (I don’t have it really clear to use in a general form)
    – «politicians always have a vested interest in their actions»

      Hello Nerea,

      Let´s check one by one:

      – «I don’t like to play devil’s advocate, yet, have you ever thought…..?»

This sentence is correct grammatically speaking, yet there is a problem with punctuation: «, yet,» > .
      «.Yet have you ever….?» or «, yet have you….?»

      – «I want to/ would like to speak my mind in this regard/in this point»

This sentence is correct grammatically speaking.

«I am really sit on the fence in this point»

This sentence is not correct. The correct sentence is «I am really sitting on the fence in this point». «Sit» is a verb you must conjugate appropriately. «I am sit» does not correspond to any correct tenses in English.

«I don’t want to beat about the bush, so, to conclude….»

Correct grammatically speaking! Just revise the punctuation with «so» as «,so,» is not correct. Could you do a research on that and share with us some possible corrections? I will give you a tip. Can we use conjunctions like but, and, so, or at the beginning of a sentence? If so, are they followed by a comma?

«I don’t have an axe to grind in this regard, so…. I will support it/ I will support their ideas/ I will not support them (I don’t have it really clear to use in a general form)

Without knowing the exact context, it is difficult to say if these sentences are semantically correct. I am sure I would not use the third one «I don´t have ……, so I will not support them». In addition, I would use the expression at the end «I will support your ideas/your plan/this idea, but that doesn´t mean I have an political axe to grind». If you don´t know how to use that expression spontaneously in a writing or when speaking with the general meaning of «having a private reason for being involved in something or for arguing for a particular reason», the best advice is to read a lot of sentences in which this expression is used. Here are some sentences:

-He should not become the chairman of the committee as he has too many axes of his own to grind.
-When I see him strongly supporting someone who could be his rival, I cannot help but think that he has an axe to grind.
-He has no political axe to grind, he is just concerned about the state of affairs here.
-I think he is gunning for the top job because he has an axe to grind with some of his colleagues.
-Some new reports may be biased because the reporters have an axe to grind.
-What started as a casual discussion flared up into a heated debate because both of them had an axe to grind.
-They have been constantly arguing with each other. They seem to have an axe to grind.

According to some websites, the possible meanings of «have an axe to grind» are:

have a private or selfish reason for doing something
      have an ulterior motive
have a strong opinion or point of view about something
have a dispute to take up with someone

I hope you learn to use this expression little by little.

«politicians always have a vested interest in their actions»

Correct sentence grammatically speaking! I would probably have been more procise when saying/writing «their actions», I would have mentioned the action itself, that is, «Politicians always have a vested interest in choosing some judges as political candidates»

By the way, «I don’t have it really clear to use in a general form» is wrong> I don´t understand how to use «have an axe to grind» with the general meaning of «to have private reasons for being involved in something or for arguing for a particular cause».

  3. Marian dice:

Regarding the explanation given to Nerea regarding the Idiom … (to speak your mind), I has appeared to me to understand that … the student has to write the expression just as it is shown in a dictionary and be aware of the fact that in that activity the grammar of the sentence is not taken into account, does that mean, even if it doesn’t make sense, it’s always with «your»? So, for example, the phrase … Allow me to speak my mind, given that we enjoy close relations and tell each other what we think. Is incorrect?

    • María del Pilar Zamora Lara dice:

Your sentence is correct! We need to change «speak your mind» depending on the subject of the sentence where you use that expression and the tenses, but in the activity that is not possible due to a mistake made by the teacher who created the quizlet.

Please revise question structure. You can’t say or write «is incorrect?». And also change»tell each other what we think» for «say to each other what we think».

  4. Marian dice:

Another small question is that, in my opinion, there is no difference between the idioms «having an axe to grind» and «having a personal interest in …», isn’t there?

    • María del Pilar Zamora Lara dice:

What I can say to you is that they could be considered to be related to each other, but they are not perfect synonyms as «have an axe to grind» involves exactly a private, selfish or ulterior reason or interest for doing sthg.

By the way, is «there is no…., isn’t there?» correct? Looking forward to your answer!

  5. Marian dice:

I know…. if the sentence is negative, the question tag es positive, isnt it ?.. Sorry!!…. what I have doubts is ,if you can write «not» without t, I have sometimes read it, maybe in very informal language.
And with respect to the other mistake …. obviously the subject is missing …
