The phrase such as<\/em> requires a comma in front of it only if it\u2019s part of a nonrestrictive clause.<\/p>\n

When to Use a Comma Before Such As<\/em><\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s an example of such as<\/em> used correctly with a comma in a sentence:<\/p>\n

In this forest, you\u2019ll see many types of coniferous trees, such as pine and spruce<\/em>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The phrase such as pine and spruce<\/em> is nonrestrictive, so you need a comma. How can you tell it\u2019s nonrestrictive? Take the phrase out and see whether the sentence is still true: In this forest, you\u2019ll see many types of coniferous trees.<\/em><\/p>\n

When to Use Such As<\/em> Without a Comma<\/h2>\n

Don\u2019t use a comma if such as<\/em> is part of a restrictive clause.<\/p>\n

Trees such as oaks and elms don\u2019t grow at this altitude<\/em>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Here we have a restrictive phrase. Try taking it out of the sentence: Trees don\u2019t grow at this altitude.<\/em> The sentence isn\u2019t true anymore. We\u2019re not trying to say that no trees grow at this altitude\u2014we\u2019re restricting the statement to specific types of trees: oaks and elms.<\/p>\n

How to Use Such As<\/em> in a Sentence<\/h2>\n

Use such as<\/em> to provide specific examples of something you\u2019re talking about. If the specific examples aren\u2019t essential to the accuracy of your sentence, then use a comma before such as.<\/em><\/p>\n

Citrus fruits,<\/mark> such as oranges and grapefruits,<\/mark> are high in vitamin C.  (correct)<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

If the examples are essential to the meaning of your sentence, omit the commas.<\/p>\n

Foods such as pizza and ice cream aren\u2019t very good for you.<\/em><\/div>\n
