World Book Day is celebrated on the 23rd of April every year since 1995. This day is also known as World Book and Copyright Day or International Day of the Book. It is an annual event organized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
A celebration of the power of books
Books are like a window onto another world – with each new page, they introduce us to new people, new cultures and new ideas. Every year, on 23 April, UNESCO celebrates World Book and Copyright Day in recognition of the power of books as a bridge between generations and across cultures.
To date, UNESCO has designated 26 World Book Capitals, from Madrid, Spain, in 2001, to Rabat, Morocco, in 2026.
The World Book Day 2026 theme is “Go All In. If you are into it, read into it”, encouraging people to read for pleasure by connecting books to their hobbies and interests.
The 2026 campaign also emphasizes that reading can be a social, modern, and exciting activity that enhances other interests.
