Hi students, today I attended to some more classes:
- English Class, with 11 pupils. This class was special since in there, it was also de Principal of the High-School!!. Because the teacher was being evaluated by the Principal while I was there to see how he taught. As they told me, new teachers had to pass some exams and assessment if they wanted to be promoted. Students were 15-16 that is equivalent to our 4º ESO. They used their book and workbook, teacher checked his homework and He explained to them what they were going to study and learn today. After that They started with an online Quizz, using Quizlet app, they did it individually and the teacher gave pluses, the activity was vocabulary in English-Polish. Then in couples started with the speaking part: They had to talk in English and the teacher walked around to listen to them and correct them. After that, the listening part began. It was a video about the topic, they did some exercise related to it and the teacher used QR questions, which students had to discuss in couples again. Polish was only needed and used to make some clarifications. The class finished with a quick sum-up and setting some homework for next day. At the end of the class teacher recommended me the app QR MONKEY to create QR codes.
- History & present was my next destination. In this case there were 27 students between 14-15, it’s equivalent to our 3º ESO. Teacher checked attendance in that big and bright classroom with a greenboard, computer and projector. After that, Teacher used a presentation about Totalitarism and students took some notes. It surprised me when she introduced the topic in the same way I usually do and even more shocking with the very same video I am used to using. That means much to me, although the class was in Polish I understood some words, she was asking to them to pay attention on the body language and attitude of Hitler’s speech, exactly the same thing I asked for to my students. The class continued with a chart with some missing information, it means, key words or main historical concepts about Hitler and Stalin dictatorship’s system. Classes in Poland only takes 45 minutes but it’s enough time for some pieces of text and exercises. They read them in silence and individually and did the activities. Then the teacher corrected them orally for the whole class.
- Maths, they were students between 17-18 years old, it’s equivalent to our 2º bachillerato. As I told you the other day, in Poland is mandatory to pass a Maths exam to access any University. Teacher, which was so friendly and easy-going, told me that they were reviewing Probability. The class was big and bright, filled with 22 students, there was an amazing green double board, with enough space to make many exercise on it, I just love that kind of greenboard!!. Teacher gave some copies to them in order to do some exercises. They sat in pairs and some students went out to the greenboard to solve the problem for the rest of the class. Meanwhile, the rest of the class kept working and correcting their own exercises. Teacher helped, guided and corrected the students on the way. She gave pluses to them and at least 5 students went out to do some exercises for the rest of the class. At the end of the class I asked her if in Poland students are allowed to use calculators in the official University exam, she said yes and in addition they are provided with some paper material that showed to me, a small booklet filled with formulas. I also asked them if the university exam was different for every students depending on their studies, I meant if they wanted to enroll in a Scientific University or in a Social or Humanistic one. They explained to me that Maths was compulsory por everybody, but, the exam itself had different exercises and levels, the basic level was the mandatory one and it was the minimum , the rest of the exercises were more an more difficult depending if you wanted to get a position in a Scientific University.
- Rehearsal traditional Polish dance: They explained to me that the oldest students would leave High School that course and there was a traditional dance that they all performed 100 days before they graduated. That means that next January or February 2023, they would have a big ceremony, with long dresses, ties, speeches and dancing. I really enjoyed the opportunity, I danced with Jacek as a partner and it made it more enjoyable.
After school time I decided to have an international meal, Japanese spicy ramen, in the heart of the Jewish Neighborhood, in front of one of its synagogues. After enjoying my warm food, I made my way to meet Jacek, who awaited for me with his bike ready. He is not only a refined teacher but also a sportive and dynamic person, who usually rides his bike🚲 every day to go to work!!. I hired one of many scooter available in the city 🛴and We went to Wawel royal Castle, (with its magical legend about a Dragon and a cave), we took some leaflets at the tourist information office, ending up in the main square for a coffee and scrolling back to my hotel through pedestrian Grosdzka street (royal route). What a lovely day!!

Clase de inglés, con 11 alumnos. Esta clase era especial ya que en ella estaba también el director del instituto. Porque el profesor estaba siendo evaluado por el Director mientras yo estaba allí para ver cómo enseña. Como me dijeron, los nuevos profesores deben pasar algunos exámenes y evaluaciones si quieren ser ascendidos. Los alumnos tenían 15-16 años que equivale a nuestro 4º ESO. Utilizaron su libro y cuaderno de trabajo, el profesor revisó su tarea y les explicó lo que van a estudiar y aprender hoy. Después empezaron con un Quizz online, usando la app Quizlet, lo hicieron individualmente y el profesor les dio pluses, la actividad era vocabulario en inglés-polaco. Luego en parejas empezaron con la parte de speaking: Tenían que hablar en inglés y el profesor se paseaba para escucharlos y corregirlos. Después comenzó la parte de listening. Era un vídeo sobre el tema, hacían algún ejercicio relacionado con él y el profesor utilizaba preguntas de QR, que los alumnos tenían que volver a discutir por parejas. El polaco sólo fue necesario y se utilizó para hacer algunas aclaraciones. La clase terminó con un rápido resumen y la asignación de tareas para el día siguiente. Al final de la clase el profesor me recomendó la aplicación QR MONKEY para crear códigos QR.

Me sorprendió que introdujera el tema de la misma manera que lo hago yo habitualmente y aún más impactante con el mismo vídeo que estoy acostumbrado a utilizar. Eso significa mucho para mí, aunque la clase era en polaco yo entendía algunas palabras, ella les pedía que prestaran atención al lenguaje corporal y a la actitud del discurso de Hitler, exactamente lo mismo que les pido a mis alumnos. La clase continuó con una tabla con la información que faltaba, es decir, palabras clave o conceptos históricos principales sobre el sistema de la dictadura de Hitler y Stalin. Las clases en Polonia sólo duran 45 minutos, pero es tiempo suficiente para algunos textos y ejercicios. Los leían en silencio e individualmente y hacían las actividades. Luego el profesor los corregía oralmente para toda la clase.
Matemáticas, eran alumnos de entre 17-18 años, es el equivalente a nuestro 2º bachillerato. Como os dije el otro día, en Polonia es obligatorio aprobar un examen de Matemáticas para acceder a cualquier Universidad. La profesora, que era muy simpático y desenvuelto, me dijo que estaban repasando Probabilidad. La clase era grande y luminosa, con 22 alumnos, había una pizarra doble verde increíble, con espacio suficiente para hacer muchos ejercicios en ella, ¡me encanta ese tipo de pizarra verde! El profesor les dio algunas copias para que hicieran algunos ejercicios. Se sentaron en parejas y algunos alumnos salieron a la pizarra verde para resolver el problema para el resto de la clase. Mientras tanto, el resto de la clase seguía trabajando y corrigiendo sus propios ejercicios. La profesora ayudó, guió y corrigió a los alumnos por el camino. Les dio pluses y al menos 5 alumnos salieron a hacer algunos ejercicios para el resto de la clase. Al final de la clase le pregunté si en Polonia se permite a los estudiantes utilizar calculadoras en el examen oficial de la Universidad, me dijo que sí y que además se les proporciona un material en papel que me mostró, un pequeño cuadernillo lleno de fórmulas. También les pregunté si el examen de la universidad era diferente para cada alumno dependiendo de sus estudios, me refería a si querían matricularse en una universidad científica o en una social o humanística. Me explicaron que las Matemáticas eran obligatorias para todos, pero, el examen en sí tenía diferentes ejercicios y niveles, el nivel básico era el obligatorio y era el mínimo, el resto de los ejercicios eran más y más difíciles dependiendo de si querías conseguir un puesto en una Universidad Científica.
Ensayo de danza tradicional polaca: Me explicaron que los alumnos más mayores salían del instituto ese curso y que había un baile tradicional que todos realizaban 100 días antes de graduarse. Eso significa que el próximo enero o febrero de 2023, tendrían una gran ceremonia, con vestidos largos, corbatas, discursos y baile. Disfruté mucho de la oportunidad, bailé con Jacek como pareja y eso lo hizo más agradable.
Después de la hora de clase, decidí tomar una comida internacional, ramen picante japonés, en el corazón del barrio judío, frente a una de sus sinagogas. Después de disfrutar de mi comida caliente, me dirigí a encontrarme con Jacek, que me esperaba con su bicicleta preparada. No sólo es un refinado profesor, sino también una persona deportiva y dinámica, que suele ir en bicicleta🚲 todos los días para ir al trabajo. Alquilé una de las muchas scooter disponibles en la ciudad 🛴y nos fuimos al Castillo real de Wawel, (con su mágica leyenda sobre un Dragón y una cueva), cogimos algunos folletos en la oficina de información turística, terminando en la plaza principal para tomar un café y desplazándonos de vuelta a mi hotel por la peatonal calle Grosdzka (ruta real). ¡Qué día más bonito!
