AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITIES AND PROVINCES
Spain is divided into territories called autonomous communities.
There are 17autonomous communities and two autonomous cities.
Each autonomous community has a capital, coat of arms, a flag and an anthem. Each autonomous community also has its own parliament, president and government.
The autonomous communities organise public services.

The Constitution contains the basic laws that the central government and the governments of the autonomous communities all have to follow. It also establishes the rights and
responsibilities that all Spanish citizens have.

Parliament is divided into two chambers:

Congress has 350 deputies. There’s a national election every four years to choose them.

Senate has about 260 senators. Some are chosen in the national election and others represent the autonomous communities.
The national government is made up of the prime minister and ministers.

THE EUROPEAN UNION
Spain is a member of the European Union (EU), a group of European countries.
Their governments work together and they have their own institutions, flag and anthem. In the EU people speak 24 official languages. Many EU countries have the same currency, the euro.
The EU has two main objectives:
