Collaboration subjects/modules of the Language Assistant -The school will organize a set schedule that is for you to follow for the rest of the year.

-Typically, you will have about three different classes per day all pertaining to different subjects.

-It is your job to prepare collaborative lesson plans with the teachers you will be assisting on the topics you’ll be teaching.

-It is highly encouraged to only speak English with the children and the professors so they can get used to hearing a native English speaker. This also motivates them to try to learn how to respond back.

-You’ll have access to the teacher’s lounge where the school provides computers, printers, and a space for you to prepare work.

-It is expected to be punctual and to follow school rules daily.

Information about the town and/or neighborhood: -Armilla is a municipality of Spain located in the province of Granada. The town is located only 4km (2.5 miles) from the provincial capital city center, Granada and has a population of 24,000. It’s a small municipality compared to other cities around Granada making everything easily accessible to you. It offers inexpensive tapa restaurants, bars, coffee shops, grocery stores, pharmacies, gyms, and a plethora of activities you can join. Armilla is also known for its enormous shopping mall Nevada Shopping where you can go shopping for specific brands or go for a stroll during the weekend. Armilla is located 45 minutes from the Sierra Nevada mountains so you have a beautiful view of the mountains. It’s important to take this in consideration when packing to be prepared for the winter season due to the temperature dropping low.

Getting to School:  -Walking/Bus/Metro: any of these forms of transportation are possible. It all depends on where you live.

-If you live in Armilla: you can walk to school, bike or take a bus. Again, it depends on where you are located so it’s best to look online and see which route would be easiest and fastest to take.

-If you live in Granada: the fastest way to get to Armilla is by taking the metro. If you are located in the center of the city you would start off at the nearest station to your home and take the metro going South all the way to the last stop which will be Armilla. Typically this will take about 20-25 minutes. Once you arrive, it takes between 7-10 minutes to walk to school.

-The metro is very easy to use and runs as early as 6:30 AM-22:00 PM on weekdays/Sunday  and 6:30-2:00 AM on weekends running every 8-15 minutes.

-Paying for the metro is done at each metro stop and you may purchase a one way or a round trip, €1.60-3.00 or you can get a “bono card” which gets you unlimited metro ride for 30 days for the low cost of €20. To access this card, you must fill out an online application (https://metropolitanogranada.es/bono30dias) with your information and send it via email to info@metropolitanogranada.es. Once it’s approved they will have you pick up your card at the central metro stop. You must present a small passport photo for your card when picking it up.

-City bus services run between 6 AM and midnight, standard ticket costs €1.20 but if you buy a travel card the bus trip will cost cheaper the more you use it/recharge it. The minimum amount of money on these cards must be €5 and they can be purchased/recharged at any tobacco shops.

-There may also be possibilities to carpool with coworkers if you find they live close to you.

Accommodation: -The location of where you live depends on how you’d rather commute, would you rather commute to work or commute to enjoy the city center?

-It’s recommended to live in the center of Granada rather than Armilla itself. Armilla is easy to travel to from Granada by metro so commuting to work from there is easy.

The city of Granada: There’s many different types of apartments you can find ranging from €100-600 a month depending on if you share a room, how many roommates you have, the size of the apartment or the location. Granada is a college city so there are many students you can live with or opportunities to easily find places available for rent.

The city of Armilla: If you are looking to save money and rather walk 15 minutes to work, then living in Armilla would be ideal for you and a slightly cheaper suburban area since it’s farther from the city center.

-Utilize websites such as idealista, fotocasa, or Facebook to look for places for rent.

Idealista : https://www.idealista.com/

Fotocasa: https://www.fotocasa.es/es/

Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/

-IMPORTANT: Do not place a down deposit on an apartment if you haven’t toured it yet. People have been known for getting scammed or the apartment not living up to the expectations provided online.

-It is recommended to arrive in Granada at least a week before your start date and stay at a hostel/hotel/Air bnb while you search for an apartment. Typically it can take about a week to find a place depending on the availability and how many apartments you are touring.

-If you are looking for someone to live with, it is recommended to join a Facebook or Whatsapp group with the NALCAP auxiliares de conversación in Granada where you might be able to find other individuals who also need a roommate.

-Overall, the cost of living is significantly cheaper compared to other countries and will generally be enough with your salary.

 Contact with other Language Assistants

-It’s recommended to reach out to other auxiliares via Facebook or Whatsapp; you can ask the school coordinator for contact information if you cannot find it.

-Whatsapp is the main source of communication that is used between all the auxiliares in Granada and it’s very helpful. You may ask any sort of question regarding paperwork, living situations, activities, etc. Most importantly it’s a way you build a community away from home and meet new people.

 Previous Experiences with Language Assistants:

-I recommend living in the city center of Granada and commute to work rather than live in Armilla. The commute is not bad and it is more fun and easy living in the center. You will spend more time there rather than Armilla.

-Try your best to only speak English with the children so they can practice speaking back and understand you. This is also a way to make connections with them.

-Motivate the kids with games such as kahoot, jeopardy, etc. this will make class more enjoyable for you and them.

-Get the metro card, you save so much money and you may recharge the card at any metro stop.
