The language assistant helps the classroom teacher, mainly in Non Linguistique Subjects of the English Bilingual Programme, such as Science,  Physical Education, Music…Their efforts are aimed to strengthen the oral skills of the students.

  • A good number of our students are highly motivated in English learning and most of them enjoy having a language assistant, which means an excellent opportunity to improve their oral skills and to get to know other cultures.

WHERE TO LIVE AND GETTING TO SCHOOL

Most of the language assistants who come to our school live in Almería city. You can get there by bus from our school, which takes about 40 minutes. Some of our teachers also live in Almería. Keep in mind that you will have different schedules, so sometimes it may be difficult to find someone who can give you a lift.

If you prefer a quiet place to live, a nice and close option is Aguadulce. It is a charming village by the seaside, just 20 minutes away from the city, with plenty of restaurants and places to go out. Most of the teachers live here, so you can easily find someone to give you a ride home.

OUR CITY

ALMERÍA OUR CITY

  • Almería is a medium-size city of the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is located in southeastern Spain.
  • The city is a 15-minute drive from the beach, one hour and a half drive from Granada, 2 hours and a half from Malaga and Murcia.
  • Almeria’s cost of living is quite affordable.

SCHOOL’S NEIGHBORHOOD

The school is located in Las Cabañuelas. It is a small Village that belongs to Vícar. The bus stop is 10 minutes away from the school. The school is surrounded by a sports center, a park and a nice walk path. You can see the highway from the school.

City centre:

You can visit the Alcazaba, the cathedral, the train station, and “El Cable Inglés,” among other buildings. It is really interesting to visit “El Museo Refugio de la Guerra Civil.” Nine meters below the streets of central Almería is a network of tunnels built in 1936 at the onset of the Spanish Civil War. Once you finish the visit, you can have an “Americano” at Kiosko Amalia, which is an iconic drink from Almería.

There are several museums to visit in the city, and we have a strong culture of going out for tapas. You’ll have many delicious options and plenty of venues to go out to at night as well.

You can also visit “La Casa del Cine,” where John Lennon stayed, and where all those stars of the silver screen who came to town to shoot spaghetti westerns in the 60s and 70s needed a place to stay. And here it is!

Cabo de Gata Natural Park

East of Almería is this natural park that making up an entire cape and the rocky volcanic landscapes within.

With less than 200mm of rainfall a year, this is Europe’s only subtropical desert, but what will amaze you is just how much there is to see and do: You could climb the highest summit, El Fraile, a long extinct volcano that crests at 500 metres and has supreme views of the sea and coastal settlements. There are also abandoned mining villages in the park, as well as secluded beaches that you can have almost to yourself. There are signs of natural life all around too, especially on the salt flats near the headland, where thousands of greater flamingos congregate.

Tabernas desert and Mini Hollywood

You can live out your western fantasies at this attraction not far from the town of Tabernas, just north of Almería.

Mini Hollywood has a set built for Sergio Leone’s spaghetti western, For a Few Dollars More in 1965, and was used again for the other classic The Good, The Bad and The Ugly a year later. After shooting was wrapped up, the extras pooled together to buy the set and preserve it as an attraction.

In the town square you’ll see cowboy stunt shows and can-can dancers, and you can step along the boardwalk or cool off in the cells at the town jail.

PROPER TAPAS

Bar snacks like these are typically Andalusian. To do it the local way, drop into a local bar like Puga on Calle Jovellanos, which has been in business since 1870.When you order a beer or soft drink you can pick up a tapa to go with it from the bar, and you’ll only pay for the beverage.Tapas here will be little dishes like Chérigan, toasted bread with aioli and anything from cured ham, omelette, cheese, mackerel or tuna on top.

This year, as a new feature, the program offers a Spanish course that you can take during your working hours. There are two specific hours inside of your timetable for you to take the Spanish course.

Conversation assistants who come to live in Almería have the opportunity to learn Spanish at the University of Almería, which offers Spanish language courses.
