Use
Qualitative analysis, especially in cations.
Description
It consists of ribbon-ended platinum wire fastened to a plastic or glass base.
Functioning
The sample that we want to analyse is diluted in water. The platinum ribbon is immersed in this solution and then it is introduced in the flame of a Bunsen burner. This flame gets a characteristic colour that depends on the composition of the sample. We obtain more valuable information if a spectroscope is employed to analyse the transmitted light.
