Separating funnel

Use

Extraction of a solid dissolved in a liquid, by means of another liquid immiscible with the previous one.

Description

Cone-shaped glass container open at both ends.

Functioning

The lower part is covered with a cork and a sample made up of one or more solids dissolved in a liquid is poured inside. Another suitable solvent, also liquid, but not mixed with the previous one, is added through the upper part of the funnel. The upper part is closed, shaken vigorously and allowed to stand for a while. When the two phases have been separated again, the one located at the bottom of the funnel is removed, removing the cap that closed it.

If the solvent has been chosen properly, most of the solid that we want to obtain is dissolved in it and, therefore, separated from the initial solution.
